Run, don't walk, away from pricing like that. I recently helped my sister, who was being quoted 2k for a new clutch in her toyota by the dealer. Found a shop for her 3 miles away that did the work for $700.
I love hearing shops say "its a foreign car, so they are more expensive to work on.." it just means they have reach for their metric tools. The work is the same.
Call around for estimates.
If antifreeze is getting into your oil, yes you are damaging the bearings, and probably more.
I used the stop leak stuff on a radiator leak, and it worked for a few months. Everyone here says it is bad for the engine. It would be dishonorable to use stop leak, then sell the vehicle without disclosing it to the new owner.
If the car is rust free, then it is probably worth taking care of the engine. If you are a gambling type of person, then consider having a shop put a used engine in. Not my favorite option, but could buy you a few years. Make sure the shop guarantees it for at least one year.
