did the engine overheat, or were you able to stop in time?
If the car is in good condition, then it is worth taking care of the engine.
If your mechanic is sure that the problem is in the engine, then:
I would gather a little more information before deciding what to do. one test that is simple to do is a compression test- it will give you a fair idea of the condition of the valves and pistons. I assume it may give you a pretty good idea of whether the head is cracked or not, but i'll let the experts here tell you that.
If it is holding oil pressure, then I would say do the head gaskets.
call around for pricing, include new timing kit as well. Have the heads skimmed at an engine machine shop, have them clean and check all valves as well. They have to take the timing components off to do the head gasket, so don't let them charge you for a complete timing belt job.
I always translate repair dollars into car payments. If It lasts more months than the equivalent payments, I consider it worthwhile. It has always worked out for me.
