recalibrate and checking for codes is definitely the way to go
.. also.. don't rule out the blend door motor.. as that's equally as common.. one controls each side.. and it's not too difficult to replace. Just make sure you can easily move the stem referenced by others.. before replacing the motor..
I've had both sides go on my 2001... I think they are around $150 or so each..
