Rear lights problem

Son's '05 Aero sedan has some rear lights acting up. I assume it's a grounding issue. Where is the ground wire attachment in the trunk. I looked in the spare well area, didn't see one.
The left brake and running light come and go, the right back-up also.
One of the license plate lights is burnt out, and that tiny little screw is rusted in there pretty good. Twisted my 3/8" drive Torx socket some before shearing off the flute tips of the socket. It's a cheaper set, I'll have to stop at Sears and pick up a nicer version. So I couldn't get to that bulb, but tried replacing others w/o any luck. I suppose that one bulb socket could be corroded, causing a shorting/grounding issue, but seems unlikely with that bulb type.
I seem to recall a problem with earlier models having the wire break in the loom from body to trunk lid? His has a solid intermediate section attached to hinge bracket, then flexible on both sides of it. Is that an improvement in these later models?
