I'm thinking the wiring harness was around $50 when I got one for my 2002 Aero SW. If they're $150 now, have a junkyard get one for you, as there has to be plenty sitting around. My 2002 went to the junkyard with one, as did the 1999 my daughter totaled. I don't know if 9-3's or 9000's used the same harness.
They simply plug-in. I'd go that way before cutting/splicing.
If you do go the later route, get a harness that does have separate power, and get good instructions on proper wiring.
GM beancounters removed the plug-in on N America 9-5's by 2007. I cut/spliced in my old harness to this car, thought I had everything sorted out, but not all the trailer lights worked, and IIRC actually caused the headlights to come on, when turned off (I had pulled the fuse). I only used that trailer once (borrowed) and it had some corroded bulbs/grounding issues that I fixed before giving back. I actually haven't used my little trailer yet with this car.
