The oil light is low oil PRESSURE, not oil level or capacity. When the light comes on you could have 7 pounds per square inch or less of pressure. Don't drive it with the light on.
Low or no oil pressure will cook your engine fast!!!!
Check oil regularly. Once a week if you have an older car. My 2001 Aero would burn a quart in 1500 to 2000 miles. By checking this often I got o know what it was doing. Actually the rings were gone at 160,000 miles. No problem to live with it as long as you know what is going on. My theory is that the GM low friction rings and pistons burn oil after a while.
I completely rebuilt the engine recently and put in good forged pistons with proper rings.
Not saying you have to do that......You just need to know the oil level in your car and check it rebularly.
