I took my '01 Aero Wagon through Colorado last summer, reaching over 12,000 feet in the passes. It ran absolutely great at altitude....when on boost. Off boost (like pulling away from a stop sign while angled uphill) it felt as if all the tires had suddenly gone flat - absolutely gutless! It takes some clutch slipping and swearing until you get going and the manifold pressure builds. Passing on those beautiful 2 lane highways is a blast.
Beware of the Denver Saab dealer (in the downtown area) - I had them change my oil and they overfilled the crankcase by almost 1 full quart. Idiots!!
I used octane booster regularly in the mountain states, mainly because I was very heavily loaded and I did not want to lose passing power. You will only be able to find 91 octane, which is fine for most cars, but your Saab can utilize the extra octane and give you more torque. I found a bottle of "The Outlaw" octane booster, which has some stock car racer grinning on the front, which treats 55 gallons. It was plenty for my time up high - I still have a bit left. You need a measuring cup and funnel with hose attached to get it into the tank. If you are willing to take the extra minute to mess with this each time you fill up, it will make a difference to the performance of your car.
