As long as I was driving down the highway at any reasonable speed above 40MPH the temp gage stayed at the 9 o'clock position. But if I got in slowly moving or stop-and-go traffic the gage would rocket to 11 o'clock.
Luckily my local Indy diagnosed this before I suffered any engine damage. I had already changed the thermostat and temperature sensor, my Indy changed my water pump at my insistence, my car still had the problem. Checking engine temps with their Tech-II while driving the car alerted the Mechanics the thermostat was opening but engine still wasn't cooling.
Since there wasn't much else that could be causing this they diagnosed a plugged/inefficient radiator as the cause (they may have done an infrared temp check of the radiator tubes too). When the old radiator was removed it was possible to see calcification in the topmost cooling passages. A new radiator was installed and the problem went away.
I drove the car another 18 months or 40K miles with no problem, or maybe it ws 2-1/2 years, I can't remember without checking old posts.
