Center Cap Clean-up solution Posted by Doug W [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I've seen a few posts here about grey grimy center caps that cannot be cleaned up. Well, I'm here to tell you there is a solution. I'd tried all sorts of cleaners with marginal results. The magic bullet is 3M Tri-Zact 3,000 grit wet / dry sand paper.
Clean the cap with soap & water. Wet the paper and the cap, put the paper on a flat surface, and wipe the cap in a circular motion briskly for about 30 seconds. Dry it off. It will look a little hazy but the color will be vibrant blue again. Use rubbing compound after the sand paper and a final buff with a clean micro-fiber cloth. The results astounded me! The caps look absolutely new. I followed up with a coat of wax.
I did the center caps after cleaning up some rash on my 17" rims ('04 Aero Sport-Combi). BavAuto (BMW supplier) sells a wheel rash repair kit. The color is an exact match for the Saab Rims. The five spoke rims are super easy to work on with their large flat surfaces. I wish I had a way to post some photos.
