Hving owned Audi's and BMW's, and assuming that you are considering sport packages on each of the cars... the 3-series handled very precisely with a bit of oversteer (new 2002's have gotten a new steering feel that has more feedback), the A6 quattro is very neutral, but remains firm. My experience with my new Aero has been the classic tendency for understeer, which is typical of front-drive cars... its very reassuring and makes the car a hoot to drive fast. My Audi TT quattro was prone to snap-oversteer, which is thrilling to say the least... not easily pushed until you are very familiar with the car. The A6 - even in the 2.7 twin turbo form is a hushed an isolated experience - similar to the Lexus GS400 - both very quick and beautiful inside - but hushed. To be honest, nothing that I have driven has provided the delightful feedback and respone of the BMW 330i and 530i if equipped with sport packages. I was cross shopping the 530i, A6 2.7t and the Aero - and settled on the Aero. I loved my 3-series, but it was useless if you needed to put anything other than a briefcase in the back seat.
I am putting Dunlop SP9000's on 17x8.5 Borbet wheels on my Aero on tuesday. I have fallen in love with these tires and have fitted them to all of my BMW's, Honda's and Audi's since 1995 when they first emerged. The SP9090's are even better in the wet if that's your climate (German made with higher silica content). I am sure that my already good opinion of the Aero will improve once the Michelin "Primacy's" are in a pile in the garage.
In closing, I might add that any of those choices will be a rewarding ride - in my humble opinion.
Happy Motoring!
