The effectiveness of the system seems to be very sensitive to both under and over charges, and I was surprised by how small a difference in weight seemed to make a difference.
A few years ago, I had an O-ring go bad, and the systems was evacuated and recharged as part of the service. It never seemed quiet right (cool but not cold, a little wimpy in extreme heat, etc.) but I just chalked it up to age and never got around to looking at it again until I got it recharged last year. (The O-ring went bad in the winter - I noticed it when the de-fogger became useless since the air wasn't drying. It was many months before I was testing cooling ability!) After the recharge, it was better but still not great.
A month ago, I thought to ask the dealer near where I work to take a look -- they did a basic service - evacuate and recharge, with a leak dye just in case. Found no issues, leaks, etc., except that they took about 0.1 lb more then they put back in (i.e., putting back the correct weight).
I can't get over the difference -- the whole system seems to be working better, even in the extreme heat we've had recently.
In my view, the precision of the professional install made a difference, and cost me only about $125.
Your mileage may vary . . . .
