The former uses about 4-5 quarts and involves removing a plug, replacing it, and then refilling. The latter requires a machine hooked to the cooling lines and takes 4-5 gallons. Or you can repeatedly drain and fill, each time getting less dirty oil and more clean oil in the mix until you are satisfied.
Simple drain and fill works well if you start at 30,000 miles and repeat every 15,000 - or 40,000 and 20,000, if you prefer. After 190K, a drain and fill at each oil change for the next 4 changes is hardly any worse than a full flush. IF it were going to make any difference by doing a full flush at this point, the transmission is on its last leg anyway. IMO
