I was working on changing out the fuel pump on my 2000 wagon, preemptively, because for the most part the car runs fine. Never had a CEL but occasionally I have had a small "hiccup" while accelerating and figured It couldn't hurt. The car has 150,000 miles on it but hadn't been treated wonderfully but previous owners so I figured the pump was probably original. As well, when taking a trip with the family a few weeks ago the fuel gauge dropped to empty while on a full tank three of four times, with the gauge recovery not always returning to the same position. I figured the baffles were floating around in pieces as well.
Upon inspection and removal I don't have any baffles. The fuel pump in the car is a relatively new looking aftermarket job with no markings whatsoever. The hose to the pump is much larger than on an OEM pump and the "T" on the line is larger only where it branches to the pump. That portion of hose was also clamped with clamps like you'd find on CV joints and though the line was somewhat flexible, it was more like fuel line than the plastic, rigid saab stuff. This made the replacement of just the pump nearly impossible as the outlet on a Walbro is so much smaller than on the pump in the car. Without a slew of reducers, etc. It couldn't be done.
Oddly, the only thing I found in the tank when I was fishing around for baffle pieces was a flat plastic disc, about 3/16ths in thickness, somewhat rough finish and about 1.5 inches in diameter, just sitting on the bottom of the tank. I have no idea what it could be doing there or where it should be. Throw out your ideas. I'm curious.
Long story short, the pump replacement was a bust and the old pump is back in the car. I'll probably modify an old NG 900 complete pump I have to take the walbro insert and swap out fuel gauge sender arms in the future, just in case, but heavens it is too hot to slave away at these sorts of projects only to have nothing but this odd disc to show for it.
