I just had some major engine repairs performed on my 2002 9-5. Please read the story below and give your opinion on 1. When the head is pulled is it posable to determine the condition of at least the upper timing chain and the lower. 2. If the lower timing chains tensioner is extended to the point where there is some wear on the guides could you still expect to get some additional use out of the car before failure. 3. Would it be reasonable to be charged the full cost to replace the upper and lower timing chains when this work was performed without being notified of the additional cost?
What appears to have happened is that the turbo failed and caused a "Hydro Lock" in the engine that caused multiple head gasket failures. The shop immediately felt that there was a head gasket failure and pulled the head. They examined the damage and quoted 1700 to repair the damage. This doesn't include replacing the turbo. Once the work was finished and the engine was run it was obvious to them that there were additional problems. 1300 quoted to replace the Turbo. We receive the car and start hearing a clunking noise and return the car to the shop. The tech checks it out and determine one of the parts they replaced "the top timing chain guide", had broken. We were told that this was their fault and that they would repair for no charge. Because of the additional damage they needed to drop the engine to get to the lower part of the engine. They found that the lower timing chain guides were worn and that the automatically adjusted tensioner was fully extended causing the wear on the guide. At this point they felt that this was not caused by them and they would need to charge for the repairs.
