I'm sure it's "safe." Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 10:35:54 In Reply to: Anyone try different fuels/grades?, Kross, Wed, 25 Jul 2012 05:25:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Modern cars are idiot proof. Put crappy gas in, and it'll adjust its performance accordingly so as not to damage the engine.
I've always run premium in my '04 9-5 Aero. But I've had a couple times where a family member or friend borrows the car and does me the "favor" of filling it before returning it... with 87 Octane. It ran fine but didn't develop the expected peak torque or performance I was used to. For example it would downshift going up hills rather than staying in gear and piling on more boost.
Also, many people report better MPG's using higher octane fuel. These engines are designed to give the highest performance (efficiency) using premium gas. So factor that into your math too.
