I received a letter from GM yesterday requesting use of my '08 Aero for ten days to do emissions verification testing. I remember getting a similar request from the EPA a couple decades ago when the US Government did such testing at their emissions lab in Ann Arbor but I wasn't aware auto manufacturers did follow up testing on vehicles.
In exchange for allowing them use of my car for 10 days I get a GM loaner vehicle and $150. My car will be returned with 80 additional miles of testing plus the mileage to GM's emissions testing facility in Milford MI.
The letter and the enclosed information sheet had a glaring difference. The letter stated all testing would be performed on a chassis dynamometer. The information sheet strongly implied the testing would be performed on local roads. Or maybe there is a local road component in addition to the chassis dynamometer piece which wasn't mentioned in the GM letter.
The reply card has a box to check if the owner agrees to submit their vehicle for testing. There is also a box to check if the owner rejects to participate as well as a short answer line to indicate why they are answering "No".
I did not see a box for "No frickin' way". I must have missed that one.
