I am not about to switch my aero to R12a. I was just wondering if anyone had used it. It is actually an option of all A/C systems.
In the Porsche world, yes lots of these systems are R12 at least on the older cars. Of course most of these hobbyists do their own work, so they have gravitated to R12a which they claim is 40% more efficient than R134 and 20% better than R12. And the you can buy it without permits etc., because it is not considered a greenhouse gas by the EPA. And it is cheaper than either of the others.
I have not used it, but find the information and this trend very interesting. Your A/C may not use it, because he does not want to use anything other than what the manufacturer specified for his liability and warranty considerations. Plus there are states that won't let you use it.
I find it interesting that we switched to a refrigerant that is so inefficient because algore said to do it. Or more accurately we switched from Freon which was bad to something still synthetic that was worse from an efficiency standpoint.
I find it an interesting topic, and maybe something to look at if you are DIYing A/C and starting with a dead system.
