Usually spelled Italian Tuneup, it means taking a car up to speed and driving it hard for a brief period to "blow the carbon out".
This is the first thing that crossed my mind when you said you saw a puff of black smoke when punching it hard to pass a truck. You may have merely seen a cloud of carbon deposits being blown out the exhaust by the sudden large increase in exhaust volume and velocity. Carbon which may have been sitting in the muffler and has no significance as a forewarning to any impending engine problem.
