... they use to make rotors. On the same car and in the same conditions I have seen some rotors rusting maybe 5X faster than others, all uncoated. Some develop light brown layer and that is it, while other will have these huge flakes of rust that propagate even on the working surface. Probably depends on how much carbon is in the steel, or the amount of good additional alloys, or just heat treatment. Unfortunately, there is no easy spec to define the rustproneness, so buying new rotors is akin a gamble - it will take years to find out if they are good or not. Staying with a reputable brand helps in the selection I guess, but my first set of uncoated Zimmermans rusted solid to the 9-5 front hubs after ~4 years. It only coated rotors for me from now on (and they look better too).
