3rd brake light 2003 Posted by saabsince 93b [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
My wife's 2003 Aero was giving an SID warning of brake light failure. turns out it was the third brake light again. I had one of the 5 bulbs burned out.
The socket/reflector holder for the 5 bulbs was a bit melted on some bulbs. Maybe I was using the wrong bulbs. Replacement is $88 at eeuro. I did some experimenting and found the system is 8 ohms, all the bulbs are in parallel, but somehow the computer can tell when one is out. The resistance does not change, but maybe the computer measures the reactance?? I don't know.
so I decided I would build my own system that would fool the computer but include some bright LED arrays. I took 2 pieces of 14 gauge copper wire and soldered 3 stock bulbs on one side and 2 on the other at the extreme ends of the enclosure. IN the center I soldered in 4 circular 12vdc LED arrays of 16 or so leds each.
I drilled 2 small holes on each side or the plastic housing to mount the wires. I could post a picture if I could figure out how, but this site is not too friendly for photo posting.
Result is a very bright 3 brake light. You can hardly see the incandescent ones on the side, but really see the center LEDS.
