Losing the circlip was a big concern for me, but I was able to push it out enough to disengage but still be in the groove of the outer shaft - it was very convenient for reassembly. It probably did this because it has just the 'right' amount of rust. If I did it over, I might tape it in place with some duct tape to achieve the same result with less concern to lose it. Removing brake lines at the master cyl doesn't give that much more room, and I worry about leaks and contamination, so I left intact. I had to flex the lines slightly to get the new booster in, but it did work. The constant remarks on how tight it is are meant to prepare you - and hopefully encourage you to do all of the suggested prep steps.
