These comments, which some may consider biased, are based on 25 years of using and selling AMSOIL synthetics:
If your engine is in good shape now, and you have maintained it well, by all means change to synthetics. The synthetics are much better. Some of the benefits include: reduced wear, cooler running, better resistance to oxidation, increased oil service life, easier cold starts (if that is a concern in your area), better protection in case of a problem (such as loss of coolant), and (in some cases) better fuel economy.
I strongly recommend use of a good engine flush before changing to synthetic (those made by AMSOIL and BG come to mind). If you don't, or won't, flush, plan to change the first batch of synthetic after a couple of thousand miles (or at least change the filter and top off).
There is more difference between synthetics than there is between non-synthetics. Far as I know, the only two synthetics which use Group IV (PAO) stocks as the primary stock are AMSOIL and Mobil 1. Either of these will last at least as long as the factory recommended drain interval. AMSOIL will last at least twice as long. Most of the other "synthetics" use Group III (hydrocracked) base stocks, which should also be able to last the recommended drain interval. You can verify this by sending in oil samples.
