I replaced the lamps in my tail light clusters, all my problems went away immediately. Closely examining the internals of the glass bulb showed that there was damage, so even though the filaments illuminated, I was getting error messages, and having other issues due to that. The 2 filaments may have actually been touching, I haven't looked that closely yet to see if that was the case.
I suspect there is contact, so that when I was touching the brake pedal with the headlights off, the brake light current was crossing over and backfeeding to my front corner lights and instrument display (which would normally be on if the headlights are on), and also would cause the brake lights to *stay* on when the headlights were turned on since the tail lamp current would cross over to the brake filament. It seems so simple now, I don't know why I couldn't figure it out.
