It's sad to think that our Saabs are devaluing so fast and hence so easy to total.
Yes bodywork is expensive. Have you priced good automotive paint recently? You can easily spend $1,500 just in materials when repainting a car.
Do you know anyone that runs a body shop? They constantly complain about how tough it is to make ends meet. And that's with labor rates between $75 and $90 an hour. They're closer to $100 on either coast.
I can relate to your tales of woe. I hit a deer with my BMW. The deer slid up the hood and windshield and tried to extricate itself from my roof flailing away trying to stand up. It took out the windshield and put about ten golf ball sized dents in the roof between windshield and sunroof. The repair cost was $1,600 and involved zero painting. Only Dent Wizard! They had to take out the headliner and all interior roof trim to do it. Oh - and replace the windshield.
