It's a GM-sourced engine with a turbo bolted on. Same engine was used in the Saturn L300 and Vue, and Cadillac Catera and early CTS. It has a weirdo turbo that's built into the front bank's exhaust manifold and only charged from the front three cylinders, yet it pressurizes all six cylinders. The turbo is TINY. I think I heard someone refer to it as a motorcycle turbo not too long ago. It's about the size of a walnut. And that's about all the engine can take, as it was originally built as a naturally-aspirated engine and I don't think Saab did much to beef up internals. I think in the Saturn it produced more horsepower, but the turbo in the Saab makes more torque. So your TD-04 conversion is a no-go.
The timing belt and tensioner/pulley need to be replaced every 60k. That probably explains why it has a "new" engine. Someone neglected that bit of maintenance. It's smooth, has decent power, I wouldn't call it a bad engine, but a lot of the Saab 4-cyl purists slander it with abandon.
When I was 17 I got a 2001 9-5 V6 with 160k on it. It was a good car but became a handful at around 180k. I sold it to a woman in town and I ran into her when she had 212k on it and it was still going. It's not a car you can tune and do fun modifications to without blowing piston rings, but it does the job.
