I was having some what I thought were transmission issues on my '04 Aero wagon...hard downshifts 2-1, random "bumping" at stop lights (felt like "popping the clutch" on a manual), other strange behavior. It sure seemed like transmission problems and my indie said that changing the fluid usually causes more problems than it solves.
On the off chance that it might be spark plug related, I pulled the DI cassette and whaddaya know...there was a large crack in the upper portion of the plastic part of the cassette (not on the coil section down to the spark plugs!). A smudge of oil was down near the plugs, but not much.
I overnighted a new DI cassette (thanks EEuroparts!) and problem solved! No more hard shifting, strange bumping, and all that. The interesting thing is that I pulled the spark plugs (BCPR7ES's) and they looked fine...new looking...even after 10K in the car.
YMMV, but have a look at the DIC
