Faulty Ignition Cylinder - Key Code?? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I have had random problems with the ignition barrel not popping up properly after shutting off the car for the last month. Usually one more attempt at turning off the car would do the trick. Not today!!
After not seeing any improvement following use of WD40 I found instructions on how to remove the entire ignition cylinder. I have removed it three times for cleaning and lubing with no improvement.
It appears the cross hole in the center shaft of the cylinder that contains a spring loaded steel pin is slightly over sized which causes the steel pin to cock rather than slide smoothly. In addition, the ramp which is molded into the cylinder body which should cause the pin to retract when the center shaft is pushed axially has a tiny burr on it. This burr prevents the steel spring loaded pin from sliding along the ramp and retracting.
To marke tings even worse, the local former Saab Dealer no longer has Saab Service listed on their website, their entire web site has changed, and all service dates are booked for over a week!!
If I can find the key code for the car I will order my own new cylinder. How do I find the key code? Is it on a plate riveted to the car or only on Saab's database linked to my VIN?
Help!
