Sometimes when the water pump bearing fails the shaft deflects enough to cause the pump pulley to gouge a hole in the front timing cover. This cover is not pressurized but contains enough oil to really make a mess in the engine compartment. If so, you will need to replace the water pump and repair the timing cover. Products such as JBWeld will repair the gouge with no need to remove the timing cover or pull the engine.
