I have had my 2000 lpt since new. After the first oil change I switched to Mobil 1 5W-30 and I change the oil every 3000 miles. I switched to the latest PCV solution when it came out. At about 100k miles I did a clutch job. I pulled the pan at the same time...
I found 2-3 little brown bits in the screen. I also found 4-5 spruce needles that had blown into the valve cover when it was off the car a few years ago. (I have included the picture below).
It seems it you use synthetic oil and change it often it prevents the formation of the sludge that can clog the screen. I believe synthetic is the key since it is more tolerant to heat than conventional oil. This is key with a turbocharged engine. Did you know the turbo glows red when in use? Run down the highway some night and pull over and look under the hood. You will see what I mean.
Drive Safe,
Joe
