Millar is correct. The button is for emergency lease of the gear-selector lock. If the battery dies you can shift into neutral and roll the vehicle out of a parking spot to get a proper jump start or tow.
One thing to note here though: the button is useless if you can't turn the ignition key on (into the run position). SO, if you loose the key/s or the ignition lock-cylinder defects (won't turn) then its stuck in Park (forever!) Or until you get a replacement key or drill out and replace the lock-cylinder.
