Car stranded; turns over, no start

Hi All,
Need some help with this one. On my way home from work this afternoon, I stopped by Wallymart--was in there for about 15 minutes. When I got back in the car to leave, the engine turned over as normal, gave a few sputters, but wouldn't start. The next few turns of the key, not even the sputters--just the engine turning over.
Things I did:
>>"checked" fuel at the fuel rail schraeder valve by pressing the stem--I did get a nice squirt of fuel.
>>disconnected fuse 17; waited 15 minutes. No change.
>>replaced the DIC with the working spare I carry. No change.
>>replaced the battery with a new one from Wallymart. No change.
During these steps, I did get a sputter or two when I had been away from the car for several minutes. But it was never anything like a real sense of a possible start. I did pull the paint can lid and check to see if I could hear the pump priming as I turned the key--that checked out positively.
The car was working fine on my way home from work, but there is a curious item I can add:
When I first got in the car as I was leaving work, the fuel gauge read artificially low, reading 1/8 tank even though I *knew* I had well over a quarter tank of fuel. As I drove away from work, over the next few miles, the gauge did slowly rise to the accurate level.
I do strongly suspect I have a bit of the tank baffle floating around that may be interfering with the fuel level mechanism. But could that possibly have also caused this malfunction?
Last summer, I did replace the fuel pump. At the same time, I also replaced the CPS.
Tomorrow morning I'll be heading to the Wallymart parking lot to try and see what's up; if anyone has advice, I'd be most grateful.
best wishes,
David
