Replacing the Brake Booster Posted by Gene N [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Replaced the brake booster in my 2002 9-5 this weekend. For some reason, this one was much harder that the one in my 1999 9-5. On the 1999, I could get to the 4 bolts at the back of the booster and bend the brake master cylinder so that it was a reasonable job.
On the 2002, I used the hybrid solution suggested by "Jeff in MD" where the bracket is unbolted (three bolts), then the boster is rotated to get to the 4 bolts on the back. My real problem came when it was time to remove the freed boster from the engine compartment. I eventually was able to get the booster out by turning it sideways and going under the master cylinder, but not without bending the flexible part of the brake lines to an alarming angle. If I have to do this again, I think I will bite the bullet and remove the master cylinder like it says in the WIS. Bleeding the brakes only takes about 30 minutes, and I probably added 2 hours to the job by not removing the master cylinder.
Total time for me was 5 hours.
