OK, so it sounds as if you have eliminated the bulbs and circuit board as culprits.
2008 is kind of early for a broken wiring harness but this problem is somewhat common for these cars. The break occurs in the corrugated cable protector right at the driver's side trunk lid hinge, easy to access. Slide the cable covering aside and look for chafed and shorting wires.
Underhood relays might be next. I don't have a WIS on this computer so I don't know if the brake/tail lights are powered through a relay or not. Swap the brake/tail light relay, if there is one, with another relay and see if the light problem disappears.
