The image of one having to climb on top of the engine is a bit like that guy holding up the front subframe with his feet...gives new meaning to grease monkey.
I'm not sure I can reach in from the top. Sounds like a backache waiting to happen so I'm not surprised yours bothered you. I'd hate to pull it all apart only to have to start again...maybe it's worth the hours labor to an indy. The hassle is the engine needs to be cold so he needs the car much of the day. I tried reaching around from the passenger side. It's potentially possible, but using a wrench could be tough. How long did it take you to get setup (remove everything) to attempt the top down approach.
Does the wrench have to be closed end? Harbor Freight sells open ended service wrenches. Sears sells a stubby 22m and stubby 15/16" wrench (not sure that will fit 24mm).
