Swedecar was spot on. Its the thermostat not the temp sensor - a surprise to me. The temp gauge is not really a gauge, but driven by the computer to tell you the engine is not warming as predicted. Replaced both with genuine Saab, not significant difference in cost.
Given the difficulty in reaching the bolts, I'd pay someone to do it. If you are driven to try, I strongly suggest a stubby flex head socket wrench, a set of cable driven hose clamp pliers, a 13mm socket and a 10 mm. Also, the gasket for the thermostat has a split around the inside circum that fits around the thermostat. (Learned this the hard way on the third try to get a leak free seal.) I replaced the top hose at the same time.
And the other codes apparently were not related to the temp gauge problem even though they occured in tandem. An aftermarket DIC (eep) cured them.
