If you could actually see _dry_ cell material through the filler openings, adding water will not help much. That part of the cells is damaged and can never work properly again. If the electrolyte level was just a little below the top of the plates, you are probably ok. If I encountered really dry cells in my car battery, I would NOT add any water. I would go by my dealer and insist in a replacenment and rant at them about not checking it.
I recently checked my Aero battery (14 months old, 12,000 miles) and had to add quite a bit of water. I don't think the dealer checks these....maybe they are used to maintenance free batteries, or they figure the batteries will last at least through the warranty period.
9-5 owners - if you have a battery with caps - service it this weekend. Wear old clothes, safety glasses or goggles, and use only distilled water, not tap or spring water that may have dissolved minerals which may harm the battery. An old turkey baster works fine for adding water - just be sure to rinse it really well before and after, and do not use it for cooking again.
And buy a totally sealed Optima or one of its clones next time.
