I don't think the turbo was all that bad. It had some forward to back play, but no side to side. When I first pulled the hose from the intercooler, a few drops came out. I sprayed carb cleaner in there and let it drain (I don't know how to remove the intercooler itself yet - it seems attached to the a/c cooler). I lowered one side, then the other to let the carb cleaner drain out.
From what I'm reading about other people's oil burning after a turbo replacement, it seems light compared to mine. Mine is like the mosquito fogger, and I am certain that I would cause several accidents if I tried driving it. Thick white smoke immediately at startup, at idle, and then even thicker under acceleration.
Thank you for your help and suggestions, I will try to work on the intercooler more I guess (it only makes sense that the oil wouldn't only be on the bottom where I was able to clean).
I'm feeling like there could be something else going on though - I just don't know where to look other than the turbo, intercooler, and pcv valve.
