Re: Alternator? Posted by Snowmobile [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Alternator?, AdamSAAB2kAero ![]() |
ABS brake and traction lights do come on when the ABS unit is having issues, but maybe if it is not seeing the right voltage to power it, it will do the same even if it is otherwise working? My 9-5 occasionally lights up like a Christmas tree (presumably due to a slightly erratic ABS unit)... but I never noticed the battery light come on when it does this. restarting the car makes it go away for a month or 2.
I would start by measuring voltage across the battery terminals disconnected, connected with car running, and also check for drops along the wires. That will eliminate battery and wires and if the running voltage is low and cables are fine, time to look at the alternator.
Mechanics familiar with Saabs will often have seen symptoms many more times than us as peons and be better able to guess (eg from the specific behaviour of those lights)... but as Swedecar points out, without actually seeing the car, pretty hard for them to do much more than make an educated guess for many reasons... eg if the customer misses an important observation, can lead one astray...
