Three years ago my daughter and I set out for New Mexico. 167,750 on the clock of my '96 9K which she was going to have for the next five months. Turned out to be 16 months. Car came home with 186K on the odo.
I did the oil, serp belt and pulleys, brakes, plugs, filters before we left. Alternator, too. a few K earlier. Had a spare DI in the trunk but that was it.
What got us? The PS pump started leaking and went through a pint an hour for four hours until we got to Road Tested Saabs in Indy where Dan and Steve fixed us up with a used pump. That was it. 29.5 mpg for 2500 miles, much of it at 80+. That was it.
I did plugs a year later when I visited her in LA, then had the clutch done because it was worn out at 180K. But that's not a breakdown, just wear and tear.
It's good to be prepared, but IMHO at lot of that is knowing the car is up to snuff before you leave the driveway. I should have thought about the PS pump when I pulled it to put in the alternator, but never thought about it. My bad.
