Saab 9-5 Check Engine Light

I have a 1999 Saab 9-5 SE 2.3L with 58K miles on it. Recently, while stopped at a light, the car started to idle very roughly and the check engine light came on and is staying on (not flashing). The current symptoms are hard starting (I have to press on the accelerator while starting), low/rough idle at ~500rpm (I think it used to idle at 750-800 rpm). Once the car warms up I am able to stop at lights without giving it gas but the idle is still low and rough. Does anyone know how to check the code that is set? Is there a special tool you need to check the codes? Do these symptoms point to a repair I could perform without taking it in to the dealer? Thanks for your help!
