Ironically, there's actually more room to work around the V6 engine compartment than the 4-cyl. The intake manifold on the 4-cyl is huge and really hugs the firewall. (Heater bypass valve replacement is a breeze on the V6 compared to the 2.3). The V6's intake manifold is on top of the engine, but unfortunately they hid a lot of components under that manifold between the V, like the thermostat and oil cooler, which are common failure items. The V6 is also shorter. Think of it as 3.5 cylinders wide rather than 4. So you get more room on the serpentine belt end too.
Regardless, both engines aren't that difficult to work on. The timing belt on the V6 is kind of inconvenient to have to change every 60k though.
