dmz is accidentally responding to a different post on the general bb re the bicycle airbag invisible helmets... ridiculously loopy imho... all that effort to make it so you don't have to wear a bike helmet... so instead you're riding around with a giant neck brace that's ready to explode into a billowing pillow helmet... how is that better? certainly not cheaper...
and, to bring it back to the 9-5... the 9-5 does not get 5 stars in the iihs suv side impact crash testing... it only gets 4 stars because one of the rear seat dummies made a slight contact with the side of the car... the 9-5 does not have a side curtain, or it would pass that... and even without, it does ridiculously well, thanks to the folding B pillar... otoh, other cars which miserably fail the same test without the airbags get 5 stars with the airbags... so the conclusion all the asian and american manufacturers made was: screw body structure (make it ok, but do little special), we'll just fill the car full of airbags and get 5 stars in the test, and that is all we need to do to sell the cars...
so what happens if the airbag doesn't deploy? or it deploys, deflates, and then you get hit again? in those cars relying totally on airbags to pass the test, people get hurt or killed. in the 9-5, there is passive structure there to deal with it... a bike helmet is not going to "not go off"... it is passive, like the folding B... now maybe if the airbag reduces the chance of concussion, that's kind of cool... helmets are just there to prevent skull fractures, which are really really bad... basically no use at all for concussions...
