I had a heck of a time getting the stopcock to turn properly initially, and was very careful, knowing that breakage would greatly complicate the repair! Anders pointed out that spraying it with WD-40 works wonders - I did so, let it soak for an hour over lunch, and all was good! Must just be a bit of minerals or whatnot come out of solution there and make it sticky, and the wd-40 seems to lubricate/break that up... but I agree, the last thing you want to do is break that off!
