Seems like shops are only stocking the universal coolant type, which covers most makes. Assuming you had the orange stuff, they should've run it by you first, before filling in something else. Come to think of it, though, the first thing I did at the end of my CPO warranty was to flush and ditch the orange coolant.
Unless one runs a specialist shop, you can't expect them to know all the warts of every make, beyond what's available in software/service-bulletins. But majority of repairs and maintenance, for all makes, are very similar in nature. Any competent mechanic should be able to those.
I think it's invaluable to find and develop some trust and confidence in a good, honest mechanic one likes, regardless of price -- cost will balance out over time if you keep bringing your business back. I let my indy source the parts, instead of bringing my own, and let them keep their margin. Most mechanics order (non-Saab branded OEM) parts from local auto-parts dealers (not stores like autozone) and prices run about 20-30% higher than eeuroparts, for instance. They'll go to car dealers if the parts dealers don't have a part in stock, say a DIC. I was told that car dealers usually sell parts to indy ~15% bellow list, and the indy must charge list price. If your indy likes you, you might get a discount on the overall bill -- say 10%. So there is a limit to how much one can save on OEM parts.
Just my 2 cents ..
