About 2k miles ago I had my car tuned, oil, tires, align, etc... and she's been running great ever since. As good if not better than many current model premium rentals I've driven this year.
Since the service, I've taken a 700 mile round trip over the holidays and a few work related commutes of 200 miles each. Still fine.
This past weekend, however, after a relatively short 50mile drive plus a long tasty dinner ... I noticed an odd whine from the engine on the way home at night. Temps had dropped to the 30s I believe.
Initially, I thought it was nothing, perhaps a fan or pump, etc... But then it came back. My wife was driving so we switched. I noticed that I could reproduce the whine generally on the way down from 3k to 2k or thereabouts.
It isn't tranny related.
I took a look under the engine with my wife revving down from 3k and could only vaguely locate the sound. Seemed like it was coming from somewhere in the mid passenger side of engine bay.
Took her to a local shop Monday and they were only able to reproduce the noise once that AM but not since even after leaving her out last night in 10 degree weather.
I've read about the plugged oil sump but at this point it could also be any number of other things like a pulley, the alternator, pulled bearing for the AC, etc...
My car has had the Saab suggested change to the serpentine belt minus one pulley? Apparently Saab recommended going back to the original design in the end?
So a choice to make there. Change the belt and pulleys anyhow?
Have them drop the oil pan (about $350 in labor) to poke around?
I'm willing to do whatever seems prudent.
