Spoilers - effective or cosmetic?

I have a '00 9-5 Aero. It has the spoiler which sometimes I think is kind of cool and other times I think is too boy-racer and an unnecessary add-on that takes away from the lines. All kinds of cars have spoilers that hardly need them so having a spoiler doesn't make your car "hot" - saying "Aero" on the side does. I think the shape of the rear of the car is already has a sort of integrated spoiler built into it. It seems like if they were so necessary, they would have been standard, not an option. I'd be interested to hear readers' comments about spoilers on these cars - do they really do anything, and at what speeds, and what do you think about the cosmetics of it?
Sometimes I consider the possibility of removing it, but that would leave me with some holes in the trunk, wouldn't it? Has anyone ever taken one off?
I'm loving the '00 Aero, after having had a '97 (which I also loved). This one is awesome. It just cries out "road trip!".
