You are right, washing helps some, but that damn salt is aggressive. I am originally from MN, a place with a good 7 months of foul winter. I had to scrap several cars before their time due to corrosion. Several did not even make it to 40k before holes came throgh rocker panels, fenders, hoods and trunk lids. Even had a gas tank rust out on a four year old car. Instead of roadkill like we have in GA, the freeways are lined with spent exhaust systems in MN. My NG 900 came from Detroit, only two years old and the exhaust system had 3 holes in it, other bolts and fasteners were frozen in place and had to be broken or cut off, had to use a torch on some of them. My Saab indie hated working on that car.
They do build cars a bit better now.
