oil pressure sensor failure mode question

My son recently called to tell me that he has been driving around in our 2000 9-5 wagon for several weeks with the oil pressure light turned on. If he had called me sooner I would have said to pull over to the side of the road and have it towed. Anyway, he drove it home and I found there was no oil showing on the dipstick and evidence that oil had leaked onto the exhaust. I assume the pressure light is a false positive since otherwise the motor would have self-destructed by now. I am thinking this could be the oil pressure sensor but can't really see where the leak is on the engine. My question is does the sensor leak and turn on at the same time when it fails. Any advice would be appreciated before I start down the wrong path.
