A 9-3 comes towed in with a no start and after listening for the fuel pump buzz at key on and look for engine rpm signal from CKP sensor (all good), it turned out to be the IDM that had died just like that when he parked the car in the drive way and it refused to start the next day.
The IDM was one of the newer ones, TK3.7, made early 07 and it is rare they die like that without setting any codes first.
But as an extra quinky dink, the owner had cranked over the engine for so many times that it had lost compression due to gasoline wash down of cylinders. I noticed the quick cranking speed right away when trying to start and was wondering if the timing chain had broken wiping out valves.
So even though I threw a new IDM on the car after just a few minutes of fault tracing, the engine did not start because of the low compression.
But removing the spark plugs and a couple of squirts of motor oil in each cylinder and then cranking over for a long time it slowly restored compression one cylinder at the time and it fired up with a big cloud of smoke from the oil.
I have only seen a few of the TK3.6 and 3.7 IDM die a sudden death but it can happen.
