I'm all for preventative maintenance but this seems a little extreme.
Why not just replace the stop arm and leave the shaft intact? You can get the redesigned (strong) plastic or go for the aluminum stop arm for the ultimate in strength. I believe that a broken stop arm is what leads to eventual broken shaft (the motor over drives that shaft stressing it until it eventually breaks).
